On March 1, Dr. Ross Renfrow, the new superintendent for Johnston County Schools, spent part of his first day on the job presenting a book to the Clayton High School media center. He chose the book North Carolina Unforgettable to donate to the school for the annual reading motivation program Read Across America. He hoped that the book, which features the photography of Robb Helfrick, would foster a deeper appreciation for North Carolina in students.

“When I go to schools, they always have the books picked out for me to read to the kids. I thought, on my first day as superintendent, I want to give, so I picked out a book to donate,” Renfrow said. “We can’t be successful in life if we’re not good readers.”

A group of various students witnessed the presentation and met with Renfrow.

“I feel honored that [Dr. Renfrow] picked CHS, because we’re one school out of a lot in North Carolina,” Catherine Edwards, freshman, said.

Dr. Renfrow presents the book North Carolina Unforgettable to Principal Clint Eaves. “Now, we will have this book for students to learn about our state,” Eaves said.

Renfrow specifically chose CHS as the location of his first school visit of the week as superintendent.

“I have a special place in my heart for all schools, but you have a great community and school here. Clayton is just amazing; it’s amazing how the community and school have grown,” Renfrow said.

Read Across America is an event structured around beloved children’s book author Dr Seuss’s birthday, March 2. During the event, librarians, teachers, educators, politicians, students, and countless others celebrate the role reading plays in their lives and foster excitement about books.

“Read Across America is a wonderful event because it starts students thinking about the process of reading,” Deanne Holcombe, media coordinator, said.
